The town was captured by the Texas Rangers during the Mexican – American War in 1846. The Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaties ceded the land to the United States after the war. The Plaza Theatre opened in downtown Laredo in 1946 but it closed in 1999 when United Artists bought the property from the municipal government. The Laredo City Council approved a feasibility study in 2001 to decide what use the old theatre would still have. A consultant proposed in 2003 that the Plaza be turned into a multi-purpose performing arts center, with dance recitals, and concerts.
