The European colonial settlement of Villa de San Agustin de Laredo was established in 1755 by Don Tomás Sánchez Barrera, while in the Spanish colony of New Spain the area was part of the Nuevo Santander district. Called after Laredo, Cantabria, Spain and in memory of Saint Augustine of Hippo, Villa de San Agustín de Laredo was.
The town was captured by the Texas Rangers during the Mexican – American War in 1846. The Guadalupe-Hidalgo Treaties ceded the land to the United States after the war. In the city, a referendum was held which voted to petition the U.S. military government in charge of the region to return the city to Mexico.
The name origin of the original Spanish city of Laredo is unclear. Some scholars say that the name comes from Glaretum, meaning “sandy, rocky place.” Others state Laredo derives from the Basque word “beautiful pastures.” Laredo might also originate from the Latin Larida, meaning gull.
The Plaza Theatre opened in downtown Laredo in 1946 but it closed in 1999 when United Artists bought the property from the municipal government. The Laredo City Council approved a feasibility study in 2001 to decide what use the old theatre would still have. A consultant proposed in 2003 that the Plaza be turned into a multi-purpose performing arts center, with dance recitals, and concerts.
